A Journey Through Medieval Criminal Museum

This is a supplementary blog to my main blog on my visit to Rothenburg. In this blog, I will briefly cover my visit to the Criminal Museum.

Background

Several years ago, I had the pleasure of visiting Germany, and one of the charming destinations on my itinerary was Rothenburg. This quaint town is perfect for a leisurely two-day exploration, and you can find more details about my Rothenburg visit in a previous blog.

There are quite a few museums in Rothenburg. One that caught my attention was the “Medieval Criminal Museum”. I visited the place in the noon and spent some 3 hours there. Shared here in this blog are some pictures and details of the Museum

About the Criminal Museum

Step back to an era when severe penalties and public shame were the tools of “law and order.” At the heart of this historical exploration lies the renowned Medieval Crime Museum, nestled in the charming town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber. This Museum has an extensive collection of authentic torture devices and masks designed for public humiliation.

Every image on display is accompanied by a detailed description, providing a vivid account of the methods employed for punishment during this bygone age. A visit to the museum is a journey through centuries-old, yet enduringly dark periods of history, offering an understanding of the judicial practices of medieval Europe.

With its historic setting, the museum immerses visitors in the criminal justice system of yesteryears. I spend nearly three hours delving into the exhibits, each unveiling the harsh realities of the past. The collection boasts around 5000 significant artefacts, making it a treasure trove for those interested in the complexities of medieval crime and punishment. Housed within a historic building, it is a dedicated showcase of the methods employed in maintaining law and order during medieval times.
