Overview of my Trip to Rothenburg

In 2012, I was on a business trip to Germany. I set aside a few days for exploration and sight seeing. Foremost on my list of sights to behold was the enchanting town of Rothenburg.

My Journey

I landed in Frankfurt in the afternoon and my stay at night was at Rothenburg. It was a three train journey

  1. Frankfurt to Wurzburg, by intercity express
  2. Wurzburg to Steinach, by another train
  3. Steinach to Rotherburg, a delightful journey in a Battery operated train

Started around 2 pm and reached Rothenburg by around 8 pm. Thus it was 6-hours scenic journey.

Place of Interest

During my visit, I explored notable attractions that added layers to the city’s historical narrative.

  • The Criminal Museum (Kriminalmuseum) offered a fascinating glimpse into the legal system and crime history of Rothenburg. Do check this blog for details and pictures from the Museum.
  • For a whimsical touch, I visited the Doll and Toy Museum (Puppen- und Spielzeugmuseum) – At the point of writing this blog, I realized that this Museum is permanently closed. I have shared my experience, photos and videos of visit to this Museum in the next blog. You may please check that as well.
  • Outer wall of the City
  • Burgarten, Wooded garden on the grounds of a bygone medieval fortress, with views & surviving castle gates.

Please note that this is not the complete list of places. You could contact the local guide, reception of the restaurant you stay or visit this site.

Let me take you through the pictures that I made during my visit.

Evening view…

Rothenburg’s tranquil ambiance takes center stage as the evening unfolds. The city gradually winds down by 7 pm, and on my first night, I experienced the serene beauty of Rothenburg during this time. Battling jetlag, I decided to explore the streets around 8 pm, only to find a captivating stillness. Not a single shop was open, and the streets were devoid of the usual hustle and bustle.

For those considering a visit to Rothenburg, I highly recommend incorporating an overnight stay to fully savor the evening ambiance. While some opt for guided bus tours lasting 3-4 hours, there’s truly a wealth of exploration awaiting. To make the most of your experience, plan a comprehensive day of sightseeing with an overnight stay to truly immerse yourself in the charm of this remarkable city.

Restaurant

The majority of the structures in and around Rothenburg date back two to three centuries. While some recent constructions have emerged, the prevailing charm lies in the enduring heritage. The hotel that hosted my stay boasts a remarkable history, standing tall for over 400 years. Likewise, the restaurant I visited carried its own legacy, with nearly two centuries of stories woven into its walls. Explore the images below to catch a glimpse, paying special attention to the ancient pillar featured in the first picture.

Outer Wall of Rothenburg

The city is sorrounded by a outer wall, which dates back to the 13th century. This outer wall was destroyed during the war, which was subsequently reconstructed with donation from people around the world. One can see the names of the donors around the wall.

Let me take you through a video first before we move to the pictures.

There was a backyard door and a path from there further to the outskirts of the city. The below two pictures reflect them.
